Android Wear Smartwatches Hit the Market

Personal computing power is getting smarter, smaller and more mobile.

At its annual Google I/O developers’ conference, Google announced the launch of some new smartwatches that will let you check out the weather, text messages, commute times and other useful information without having to whip your phone out of your pocket.

The watches, falling under a new tech category called “wearables,” are the $229 G Watch, made by LG, and the $199 Gear Live, made by Samsung. They are both available for sale on the Google Play store. Another watch, the Motorola Moto 360, is expected to be released later this summer.

The watches are powered by the Android Wear operating system, which links via Bluetooth to smartphones running Android version 4.3 and up.

The watches have a touch interface, but they work best with Google Now, Google’s digital personal assistant that responds to voice commands. Users say “Ok Google” to launch web searches, music playback, navigation, note taking, reminders and other apps.
